We had the English Festival yesterday.  Twenty-seven students gave a speech in  a nice hall.   I was a chief judge and had a tough day with evaluating all the speakers.  I was also one of the judges five years ago.  I remember that I was happy being a judge because I liked the contents of the speech the third-year students made.  This year, I was not as happy.  The reason that I felt that way may be  because  I was not moved by the contents of the speeches.  Their English proficiency must be much higher than five years ago, but contents were not.  We learn English to communicate.  If we did not have things to talk about, our English lessons could be useless.  In terms of this, although I am usually reluctant to be in charge of school events, we, as an English teacher, must give our students as many types of  opportunity as possible.  

昨日英語スピーチコンテストがあった。２７人の生徒たちが素敵な会場でスピーチをした。私は審査員長としてタフな日を送った。５年前も審査員だった。３年生が作ったスピーチの内容のレベルの高さに喜んでいたのを覚えている。今年は、それほどは嬉しくなかった。そう感じる理由はおそらく３年生のスピーチに５年前ほど感動しなかったからだ。英語のレベルは間違いなく今年のほうがずっと高いが、内容が及ばなかった。私たちはコミュニケーションするために英語を学ぶ。話したいことがなければ、伝えたいことがなければ英語は使いようがない。この観点でいえば、たとえ普段から私は学校行事の担当に腰が重い教員だとしても、できるだけ多くの種類の経験を与えなければならない、英語科教員として。
