久しぶりに仕事に追われない休みをいただいた。

休日にのんびり過ごせるのは幸せだ。

好きな女優が主演する映画を見て、

楽しい気分になり、脳もきっと休まっている。

今年担任するクラスの終わり方、

来年担任するクラスの始め方、

反省と計画が頭の中をぐるぐる回って、実は楽しい。

アメリカから戻って4年間、

「コミュニケーション重視」というよりは、

「参加型」の授業ができるよう工夫を続けてきた。

自分なりにサイクルを作ったりして、

できるだけ「教える」ことなく力を付けようとしてきた。

今、まさに受験生となった自らの教え子たちがもう一歩飛躍するために、

「面倒くさい日々の授業」から「教わることを求め始めた」彼らに、

「教える」チャンスが到来していると思う。

英語の基礎体力はもう付いたはずだ。

アメリカで学んできたことの多くは、40人一斉授業では使えない。

しかし、その理論は、出版物に掲載されている数多くの「活動」を

吟味することに役立っている。

多くの先生が新学習指導要領開始に備えて、

効果的な活動を模索しているように思う。

いろいろやれば、いろんな力がつく、

そんな適当なやり方ではいけないと思う。

ヒントは数多く転がっているのだから、

自分なりに吟味してよい授業を来年も作って行きたい。

and how I should start my home-room class next school year
really makes me have fun.

Coming back from the US, 

I've been trying to make a student-centered lesson rather than communicative.

I attempted to make a cycle to teach on my own so that my students can learn without my "lecture."

Now they have begun preparing for university entrance examinations next year.

It seems that they regard lessons as "the moment when they can learn" rather than "a tiring 50 minutes."  It is what we call "teachable moment."  They are mentally ready to listen to "lectures" about English.

Most of the things I leaned in the US cannot be applied to my lesson with 40 students.

But the theories are helpful to scrutinize published "in-class activities" for such a teaching environment.  The activities in books do not necessarily seem to be appropriate to improve general learners' English, or sometimes just not for my students.

A number of Japanese teachers of English, however, appear to be trying to find good in-class activities.  I don't think it is enough just to conduct a variety of exercises in order to improve various aspects of their English ability.  It is necessary for us to examine if our in-class activities are really good for our students, so that we will be able to conduct excellent lessons.
